College launches new Painting and Decorating centre

Tameside College welcomed painting and decorating industry professionals, Dulux, ProDec and Bromborough Paints to join students and staff to launch their brand new painting and decorating department.

The new department will help fill some of the skills demands in the construction sector as well as offer students in the Tameside area another trade route to qualify in.

Teresa Farran, Deputy Principal at Tameside College, cut the ceremonial red ribbon outside the new painting and decorating classrooms to the cheers and applause of the guests. She said: “I’d like to thank everyone for a great team effort in preparing the section and presenting our professional training experience perfectly. This was a great start and I look forward to the growth and expansion of our new course offering.”

Adam Johnson, painting and decorating teacher at Tameside College, gave industry guests a tour of the learning facilities and showcased different projects that students had been working on including: colour wheels, wall papering and different decorating techniques. Megan Ribbon, a level 1 painting and decorating student even treated Deputy Principal Teresa to a lesson in painting colour wheels.

Many industry professionals and suppliers came to support the event including Tony Woodiwiss, Store Manager at the Rochdale branch of Dulux. He said: “It has been a great day and we really appreciate being invited to the opening of the new department. We want to support Tameside College in any way we can as their students of today are going to be our painting and decorating professionals of tomorrow.”

Simon Muschamp, Faculty Director for Construction and Engineering Technologies at Tameside College, said: “The launch of our new painting and decorating department was fantastic with three leading paint suppliers commenting on how good the area was with an additional leading supplier of brushes and rollers asking if they could use our centre to trial the latest equipment entering the market.  The learners were a credit to the department showing off skills they have learnt in a short period of time which was also complimented by employers and suppliers who attended. With our first apprentice now enrolled our painting and decorating department will go from strength to strength meeting local and national skills demand in the sector.”
