Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery

This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16 and above who work or want to work in the construction industry and specialise in working with wood.

Level 1 introduces the learner to carpentry and joinery skills. It allows students to learn, develop and practise their practical ability and construction knowledge with a mixture of theory and practical sessions which develops the learner at their own pace.

This course covers the following skills and Knowledge: The principles of construction building including Information and communication with in the industry, producing basic woodworking joints, safely using various hand and power tools and Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction.

This is assessed through producing several pieces of practical work to industrial standards that will demonstrate your ability and allow you to progress, and end of unit knowledge exams of which there are two which must be sat online in our specialist exam testing centre.

Carpentry & Joinery is an exciting and challenging career. The course will combine core skills such as communication, organisation, planning as well as practical skills. The course will give you the knowledge and skills to progress into a higher qualifications and various pathways within the industry.

At Tameside college you will be taught in purpose built Carpentry and Joinery workshops and have access to a wide range of tooling and power tools that reflect the workplace in partnership with a number of major suppliers to the industry.

You will have access to an Individual Learning Plan which will be designed for your needs, to ensure any learning needs you may have, are supported and to give you target to meet throughout the course to ensure your success.

When you attend Tameside college you will be required to complete knowledge assignments online which your tutor will give you feedback to ensure you receive the maximum grades in your assignment and following unit exams.

At Tameside college you will also be given the opportunity to work on community projects throughout Tameside and gain work place experience through guest speaker and site visits to ensue you gain a wide range experience of what the industry can offer you and how you can gain real life experiences in partnership with Tameside college.
Learners must have:

●  GCSE grade 9 – 2 in English and Maths.

●  Successful interview with a Carpentry & Joinery tutor

●  A genuine interest in the working with wood and developing your skills and knowledge

●  Good communication skills

●  A hardworking approach towards the study and the industry
Assessment is ongoing throughout the duration of the course. We will ask you to complete practical assessments which are recorded in a basic work book which includes a brief written task in relation to the construction industry Health & Safety and communication. A long side end of unit knowledge assessments and two online (Evolve) assessments.

●  City & Guild Diploma Level 2 in Bench Joinery

●  NVQ Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery Standards (Apprenticeship)
